Internet Safety Reflection

1. I read the article "An Ensign to the Nations, a Light to the World" by President Hinckley. It was awesome! He talked about how we need to set an example for the rest of the world, stick to our standards, and stay away from the sleaze of the entertainment of the day.

2. I watched the little clips on the netsmartz cite. The stories of how kids got trapped in that mess were really sad. I though the one about tracking Teresa was creepy. It is scary how accessible our personal information is. That you can find out all of that in less then 20 minutes makes you think twice about your online activities. I also watched the FauxPaw clip. I thought that was a cute way to depict how easy it is to be deceived in online chatrooms. The PBS documentary was interesting. It is crazy how much time our generation spends online.

3. The biggest take-away for me was to be careful with personal information. I always knew you could figure out personal information if you did a bit of searching however I didn't realize it was that accessible. For my own safety and for when I become a parent, I don't want our information to get out there. The other big take away was not to become super dependent on chatrooms/networking pages. There is more to life than being on a computer in a room all day. Plus, those things are often unsafe.

4. She knew that you have to be careful on chatrooms/networking cites. She told me she doesn't add friends that she doesn't know and she is careful with her privacy settings and the other info she has on there. She seemed a bit surprised by the info I shared about how easily it was to track down personal info. She thought it was crazy how you are able to find such personal facts just from a first name. I think she will be more careful with the types of things she adds on facebook and will take caution with the types of chatrooms she is involved with.
