Virtual Tour Plan

Sixth Grade Standard I: Students will understand how ancient civilizations developed and
how they contributed to the current state of the world.
Objective 2: Evaluate how religion has played a central role in human history from ancient
times to today.
Indicators:
a. Explore the importance of religion in the cultural expression of ancient
civilizations (e.g. customs, artistic expression, creation stories, architecture
of sacred spaces).
b. Identify key tenets of the major world religions (i.e. Buddhism,
Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism).

I chose this standard because I think it allows students to explore important religious cites up close and personal without actually being there.

Location Activity DescriptionGoogle Earth Content
1. Uluru, Austrailia
Students will measure the dimensions of Uluru (Ayers Rock) using the ruler. They will also view several you tube videos on Uluru, rock art, and Aboriginals

3D building, ruler, you tube video

2.Teotihuacan, MexicoStudents will measure the dimensions of the pyramids and plaza. They will watch a you tube video about Teotihuacan.

3D building, ruler, you tube video

3. Giza, Egypt
Students will measure the dimensions of the pyramids and plaza. Compare with the pyramids at Teotihuacan. They will watch a you tube video about Ancient Egyptian religion.

3D building, ruler, you tube video

4. Jerusalem
Students will measure the dimensions of the City of Jerusalem as well as the dimensions of the temple. They will compare ancient Jerusalem to modern day Jerusalem using an overlay.

Internet Safety Reflection

1. I read the article "An Ensign to the Nations, a Light to the World" by President Hinckley. It was awesome! He talked about how we need to set an example for the rest of the world, stick to our standards, and stay away from the sleaze of the entertainment of the day.

2. I watched the little clips on the netsmartz cite. The stories of how kids got trapped in that mess were really sad. I though the one about tracking Teresa was creepy. It is scary how accessible our personal information is. That you can find out all of that in less then 20 minutes makes you think twice about your online activities. I also watched the FauxPaw clip. I thought that was a cute way to depict how easy it is to be deceived in online chatrooms. The PBS documentary was interesting. It is crazy how much time our generation spends online.

3. The biggest take-away for me was to be careful with personal information. I always knew you could figure out personal information if you did a bit of searching however I didn't realize it was that accessible. For my own safety and for when I become a parent, I don't want our information to get out there. The other big take away was not to become super dependent on chatrooms/networking pages. There is more to life than being on a computer in a room all day. Plus, those things are often unsafe.

4. She knew that you have to be careful on chatrooms/networking cites. She told me she doesn't add friends that she doesn't know and she is careful with her privacy settings and the other info she has on there. She seemed a bit surprised by the info I shared about how easily it was to track down personal info. She thought it was crazy how you are able to find such personal facts just from a first name. I think she will be more careful with the types of things she adds on facebook and will take caution with the types of chatrooms she is involved with.

Week 10

I thought it was cool how technology can be used for lots of different topics. Since going into the classroom, I thought it would be hard to implement technology with such young kids but these videos made it seem a bit clearer with how to do so. Little kids love using technology to learn. You can throw in little bits of technology here and there and the kids love it. I learned that it is important for the kids to work in groups when using technology and to allow them to explore with it and let them figure things out by themselves. Kids are very technology savvy so organizing learning in conjunction with technology kids will have greater motivation and interest in learning. I like the idea of using technology to communicate with other schools about topics they are using. These videos made me more aware of the fact that technology doesn’t have to be a big deal. You can add it in here or there to enhance things and that is all it takes.

Technology at Riverview

I did all the parts for the week 9 assignment. It was interesting to see all the access to technology we have at my school. In my classroom we have a projector, computer, CD and Tape player, TV, and VCR. There is a lot of other technology that is available throughout the school such as a multi-verse projector and a digital camera. Riverview has two computer labs which I think is awesome. They use a lot of educational computer programs to help the kids that are struggling. I think it is great that so many resources are available if we take the time to look into them and use them.

Science Challenge

For my project I'll be using the 6th grade science core:
Standard 1: Students will understand that the appearance of the moon changes in a predictable cycle as it orbit Earth and as Earth rotates on its axis.
Objective 1: Explain patterns of changes in the appearance of the moon as it orbits Earth.
a. Describe changes in the appearance of the moon during a month.
b. Identify the pattern of change in the moon's appearance.

Using the Stellarium program I will have the students observe the phases of the moon. This will allow the kids to see what the moon looks like each day even if the weather is bad or they are otherwise unable to observe it. After exploring the phases of the moon they will then draw the phases of the moon. I will also have them describe each phase, describe the changes in the appearance at different times during the month, and identify the pattern of change the moon goes through.

Content: Students will describe changes in the appearance of the moon during, identifying the phases and pattern of change, and will then draw the phases.
Pedagogy: Students will describe and draw the phases of the moon after exploring/observing what the moon looks like.
Technology: Students will use Stellarium to observe the phases of the moon.

Class Videos

Nichole: Her movie was very informative. It looked really professional with all the transitions.

Ashley: Loved the use of pictures, music, and narration. I thought it was cool how she had her husband narrate it for her.

Sabrina: I really liked how she found music that went along well with the story and pictures. It built up suspense for the book.

Alyssa: It was cool how she used a book that she had written herself. That give you a chance to let others see your writing skills as well.

Kami: This video looked very professional. I loved the background music. It was very cool.

Heather: Heather used Spanish and English words. I thought that was a fun, interesting twist.

Web 2.0

My wiki is: http://ipt287eyestone.pbworks.com/

It was so cool to learn about all this new technology! I had no idea there was so much stuff out there that could be used. I really liked learning about wiki's. I was always intimidated about the prospect of having to create a website but now I know that it's not so bad. It was cool to learn how to embed items on the websites as well as how to create links. It is cool that with Web 2.0 you can connect with people around the world. I really like the idea of goodreads. It's cool to have a place where you can see what some good books are. Google reader is a great place to bring your subscriptions to one place. I also like how diigo allows you to bookmark your favorite websites.

Setting up the wiki was probably the hardest thing but that is because I've never done anything like that. It was just a long process to learn how to embed everything and get things set up. Although learning about the wiki's was probably the most difficult thing we did, it was also the most useful. I can definitely see myself using one for my class.

Education

I love getting an education because it is a new adventure every day. There are so many cool subjects to learn about. The mind has an amazing capacity to hold knowledge and I believe it is often underused. By receiving an education I am able to open doors to opportunities that I would never have thought possible.

I love the thought of being able to be a positive influence on other people's education. Teachers have an amazing impact on the young students they teach. They help mold them into the people they will become. I want to be able to change these young lives for good while also filling their minds with information they will need for the future.
